LESS 2027 — CALL FOR PAPERS Workshop on Learning to Extract and Send Semantics Co-located with the 30th Conference on Innovation in Clouds, Internet and Networks (ICIN 2027) March 15, 2027 — Pisa, Italy Workshop website: https://borgianni.github.io/less-2027/ Paper submission link: https://edas.info/newPaper.php?c=35870&track=140815 Conference website: https://www.icin-conference.org/ Aim and Scope Networked intelligent systems increasingly rely on continuous and heterogeneous data generated by sensors, wearable devices, biomedical platforms, microphones, cameras, radar systems, and industrial equipment. In many applications, the receiving entity needs only the information required to perform a specific task, such as detecting an event, estimating a state, or supporting a decision. The challenge is to identify, extract, and communicate this information while preserving the performance required by the application. The Workshop on Learning to Extract and Send Semantics (LESS 2027) brings together researchers and practitioners working on the extraction, representation, communication, and evaluation of task-sufficient semantic information. The workshop considers the complete chain from physical observations and source data to semantic representations, network communication, and downstream application decisions. LESS 2027 welcomes contributions that investigate what information an application needs, how this information can be extracted and exchanged, and how the resulting choices affect application performance, communication overhead, latency, and computing-resource consumption. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Application-grounded semantic communication and task-sufficient representations; - Goal-oriented and task-oriented communication; - Learning-based semantic extraction from continuous sensor and multimedia streams; - Event-, state-, intent-, token-, feature-, and embedding-based communication; - Multimodal semantic representations; - Representation of application information requirements and semantic interfaces between applications and networks; - Semantic filtering and relevance-aware communication; - Adaptive semantic representations and semantic update generation; - Edge AI and semantic processing across the device–edge–cloud continuum; - Distributed and split inference for semantic communication; - Application-aware and semantics-aware networking; - Processing, scheduling, and prioritization of semantic traffic; - Semantic freshness and Value of Information; - Uncertainty and confidence in semantic representations; - Semantic sufficiency metrics and interoperability; - Mechanisms for requesting additional details or source-level information; - Benchmarks and evaluation methods relating application utility to communicated information; - Experimental systems, datasets, testbeds, and real-world deployments. Relevant application areas include digital health, wearable systems, sports sensing, speech and audio, industrial IoT, robotics, smart environments, intelligent transportation, autonomous systems, and integrated sensing and communication. Important Dates - Paper submission: January 3, 2027 - Acceptance notification: January 18, 2027 - Camera-ready submission: February 7, 2027 - Workshop: March 15, 2027 Paper Submission Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished contributions that are not under review elsewhere. All submissions must be written in English and use the standard IEEE two-column conference template. Papers must not exceed 7 pages, including figures, tables, references, and all other material. IEEE conference templates are available at: https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html Submissions will be peer-reviewed for originality, technical quality, clarity, relevance to the workshop, and the strength of their application-grounded evaluation. Accepted and presented papers will be included in the ICIN 2027 conference proceedings.
